Freo Explorers: A group about navigating the community safely

Freo Explorers is a group designed to provide a safe and fun environment to help you navigate the public transport system! We welcome 12 to 16 year old participants who are seeking to upskill in navigating the community safely.

Objectives, aims and benefits

  • Preparing for public transport: How to signal for a bus, waiting for a train, how to use a smart rider, where to buy a ticket, how to use the Transperth app, planning the journey, and more.
  • Steps and expectations for catching public transport: How to get on and off the bus, how to load money on the smart rider card and more.
  • Problem-solving skills, what to do if you got off at the wrong stop? Who do you ask for help, what might you say to someone if you require assistance, how would you buy a bus ticket if you lost your smart rider, what happens if my phone dies, planning out the time it takes, and more!
  • Upskilling in preparation for high school and/or leaving high school and obtaining employment or navigating the community safely.

What the participants need to bring to Freo Explorers group

  • Backpack – water bottle and snacks
  • Smart rider and/or money
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Earplugs or headphones
  • Fidget toys
  • Phone
  • Transperth app downloaded on the participant’s phone. More info on the Transperth app here.

Cost

$387.98 per person.

Funding: Can use NDIS plan (improved daily living).

If there are sessions you know you can’t attend because of prior commitments, please let us know during registration or as soon as possible. **Please provide us with at least 7 days’ notice for any necessary cancellations.**
