What is Autism?
Autism is a neurotype; a developmental condition that includes differences in the structure and function of a person’s brain, creating a different way of working for that person.
Every autistic person experiences and interacts with the world in their own unique way. At Superyou, our strengths-based approach focuses on the positives of being a unique individual.
As we like to say, if you’ve met one autistic person, you’ve met one autistic person! Everyone is different.
Receiving an autism diagnosis enables kids and adults with autism to access better help and support that empowers them to live their lives to the fullest.

What’s the Purpose of an Autism Assessment?
The primary purpose of an autism assessment is to determine whether a person meets the criteria for autism.
Receiving a formal diagnosis is another step in the journey of understanding someone better, whether that someone is you, your child or a loved one!
It also helps you gather valuable insights into their strengths and the support requirements they need across various settings, like school, work and home.

FAQ's
How do I know if I or my child should seek an autism diagnosis assessment?
It can be challenging to identify the signs and behaviours that may indicate that an individual is autistic, as every autistic person is unique!
However, if you have noticed that your child’s development is different to their same-age peers; it can be helpful to discuss this with other people who know your child well, such as their child health nurse, daycare educator, teacher, therapist, GP or paediatrician.
What does the autism diagnosis assessment process typically involve?
Our team will prepare clients with as much knowledge and information as possible, so no stage of the process comes as a surprise.
While assessments may differ on a case-by-case basic, typically clients can expect a pre-assessment meeting where we will invite them to share concerns, reports from other providers and some information on the person being assessed, followed by the assessment session.
We ensure all observations are performed with empathy, compassion and authenticity with the main goal being to ensure the client is supported and comfortable to just be themselves!
On the day of the autism assessment, parents complete an extensive clinical interview, while their child completes a standardised play-based assessment, as well as an informal play session with the clinicians.
Other assessments may also be completed, such as pragmatic speech or cognitive assessments. Supporting evidence collected outside of the assessment appointment is also considered in our assessment, and we may liaise with teachers, school psychologists, therapy clinicians, and review reports from allied health professionals, and paediatricians.
In some cases, further information may be required, and a school or daycare observation will be scheduled.
What happens after the assessment?
A list of recommendations will be included in the diagnostic report, tailored to the individual and the outcome of the assessment.
You will also be offered a feedback session to discuss any details of the report requiring clarification, recommendations made, and to discuss next steps.
What's the cost involved in an assessment?
Depending on the outcome of the assessment, clients may need to access necessary support services, NDIS enquiries, therapy options and other supports. We aim to offer a high level of after-assessment support to our clients to ensure they’re supported both throughout the assessment process and afterwards too!
Does NDIS cover the cost of autism assessments?
No, unfortunately the NDIS does not cover costs of autism assessments.
Am I eligible for a Medicare rebate on the cost of assessment?
If you have a referral from a paediatrician, you will be eligible for a small Medicare rebate.
What payment plans are available?
To support more accessible assessments, we offer the following payment plans:
Option 1 – Two payments totalling $3997.
- 1 x payment of $2000 prior to booking in your first appointment

What diagnostic tools and guidelines are referred to throughout the assessment?
At Superyou, we use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2); a semi-structured, play-based (depending on age) assessment tool.
There may also be cognitive or language assessments if required, but we will advise this on a case-by-case basis.
How long does the whole assessment process take?
The intake process is subject to waitlists and availability. The Superyou Autism Assessment clinic operates at our Fremantle clinic on Monday & Tuesday mornings.
Comprehensive assessments with both a psychologist and speech pathologist are completed in a single appointment that takes up to 3 to 4 hours.
We aim to finalise diagnostic reports within 4 weeks of the assessment appointment, although delays can occur depending upon the complexity of the assessment or if further information is required. Our Client Relationship Officer will liaise with you if this is likely.
