What Type of Physiotherapy Supports are Available With NDIS funding?

What Type of Physiotherapy Supports are Available With NDIS funding?

Listen

Want to know more about physiotherapy in Perth and what is funded by the NDIS?

We’ve got you covered!

Let’s look at how physiotherapy can help you reach your goals, what types of NDIS physiotherapy participants can receive with their funding, who can receive physiotherapy services, and where you can find experienced physiotherapists in Perth.

How can NDIS physiotherapy services help you achieve your goals?

Physiotherapy, commonly referred to as physio (us Aussies love to shorten words!), is a type of allied health service that assists and improves an individual’s ability to move and function in their everyday lives.

Physios can support individuals in achieving a wide range of goals. From supporting infants to crawl, to working with older clients wanting to prioritise their physical wellbeing, stay fit and reduce pain.

Types of physiotherapy supports covered by the NDIS

To be able to use your NDIS funding for physiotherapy, you must demonstrate that physio is a necessary support to help you achieve your goals.

Once the NDIS has approved your funding, you can use your capacity-building support budget to receive a range of different physio services:

  • Assessments: Physios conduct a range of different assessments to help you identify your strengths and the type of care you might benefit from. Physiotherapy assessments include falls and balance assessments, mobility screening assessments, and assistive technology assessments, which could include recommendations such as wheelchairs, walkers, or modified trikes.
  • Transfer, mobility, and hoisting plans: Physios can work with you and other important people in your life to make plans that manage any mobility issues in a safe and comfortable way, using tools like mobility aids and assistive equipment as therapeutic supports.
  • Gym-based strength programs: Physios can develop a fun and safe gym program to help you achieve your physical fitness and well-being goals. This kind of tailored exercise program is a great way to ensure you’re getting your body moving while staying within the realms of your function and capacity!
  • Hydrotherapy: This is a type of exercise done in the water to reduce the impact on your joints. Hydrotherapy is a fantastic method of rehabilitation following an injury. It’s also a fun way to stay fit!
  • Hippotherapy: To the surprise of some, hippotherapy has nothing to do with hippos, and everything to do with horses! A unique form of physiotherapy, hippotherapy involves working with horses and using their natural movements to support mobility goals. Great for kids and adults alike, this is another type of physiotherapy support your NDIS budget can cover.
  • Early-intervention and paediatric physiotherapy: Physios can work with infants on reaching developmental milestones such as crawling, rolling, and walking. As children get older, physios can work on functional goals to support participation at school, home, or daycare.

Is physiotherapy strictly for NDIS participants?

Of course not!

You don’t need a referral to see a physio, and, much like NDIS occupational therapy, physiotherapy isn’t restricted only to NDIS participants. Privately-paying clients can also access the same level of services and expertise.

However, if you do have funding allocated to physiotherapy within your NDIS capacity-building supports budget, then you can receive any of the above services to help you reach your goals.

What conditions and disability can NDIS physiotherapists treat?

People often think of physiotherapy as strictly for sports injuries, but that couldn’t be further from the truth!

Physiotherapists support individuals with a range of different requirements, such as those with neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or autism), and acquired disability (e.g., Parkinson’s, acquired brain injury, or spinal cord injury).

Our NDIS physiotherapists see young clients learning to walk and crawl, and older clients in their 80s and 90s wanting to prioritise their fitness and wellbeing, and improve their quality of life!

Physiotherapists can also work in harmony with other allied health services and health professionals, like occupational therapists and speech pathologists.

When should you see a physio?

There are many circumstances where it might be time to see a physio, and it will be different for each person.

Whether you’ve recently experienced an injury somehow or you’re living with a chronic health condition, it’s best to come and see us as soon you feel you’re struggling.

For example, you might be experiencing challenges with daily living, everyday tasks and/or personal care.

Perhaps you feel you’re starting to lack physical function or restriction of certain movements, or a significant disability is growing worse.

Whatever the case, neglecting to seek help can cause injury and issues to worsen. It can also cause your mental health and well-being to suffer.

Who can provide NDIS physiotherapy?

A qualified physiotherapist should be the only professional you look to when needing support with related health conditions.

To be qualified, physiotherapists must have completed the necessary education pathway – typically a Bachelor, Masters or Doctorate in a relevant area – and have an active registration under the National Physiotherapy Board of Australia (which is a requirement by law!).
